As you all know, cannabis has a multitude of uses, from recreational to medicinal to culinary. Yep, you don’t just smoke it…in fact it can be used to make, for example, marijuana oil, as we will see today. If you’d like to try it you can find whichever variety of marijuana that you need in our online seed bank.
For many years the oil extracted from marijuana has been consumed, though the rigorous process of extracting gas and toxic substances that the plant releases during the process of making oil has not always been practiced. However, as everything evolves, we have finally been able to find methods to enjoy clean, consumable oil.
There are various kinds of oil but we can basically distinguish between 3: marijuana oil, hemp oil, and hemp seed oil.
Rick Simpson’s medicinal cannabis oil
Rick Simpson’s oil has become very popular in the last years because of its medicinal abilities, and positive effects on cancer patients as well as people with other pains or illnesses. The difference between this oil and other marijuana oils is that it contains higher levels of THC, which makes it illegal in Europe.
For that reason, we recommend that if you want to purchase it, you verify that the source from which you make your purchase is legitimate, since you may encounter false promises circulating on the internet, and find yourself surprised by unwanted results. One solution is to make your own homemade oil.
Who is Rick Simpson?
Rick Simpson is a Canadian doctor who suffered from skin cancer. After years of fighting the disease, he asked his doctor to prescribe him with marijuana in order to try one more option, since he had read about the good results reported by numerous scientists and doctors.
His doctor didn’t want to prescribe it to him, so he decided to try it as a last resort. Its effects were very positive. His pain decreased, he could sleep better and his appetite returned—one of the common effects of medicinal marijuana. All of this had been obtained using a natural plant, medicinal cannabis. At that point, he decided to share it with people who were suffering in his same situation or with other pains.
He was imprisoned for (supposedly) endangering public health and today he is in Europe, under political asylum, where he continues his research.
For hundreds of years and across many civilizations, the cannabis plant has been used medicinally. Given this information, if we focus of Rick Simpson’s oil, we will find that, as long as it is used correctly and at the correct dosage, positive effects and benefits of medicinal cannabis are the following:
- Anti-inflammatory: to alleviate pain, acne…
- Relaxant: helps to fight stress and anxiety.
- Analgesic: for people with fibromyalgia, arthritis, osteoarthritis…
- Neuroprotector: good against Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s.
- Reduces blood sugar: for some kinds of diabetes.
- Vasodilator: to combat cardiovascular illnesses, varicose veins.
- Reduces nausea caused by chemotherapy.
- Spasm suppressant: good for epilepsy.
How do you prepare marijuana oil?
STEP 1. Prepare your materials
Ingredients and utensils needed:
– 50 to 100 grams of bud, as dry as possible in order to cut it up well
– Extra virgin olive oil or organic coconut oil
– 1L of high-proof, consumable alcohol
– Glass jar or recipient
– Spoon or silicone spatula
– A pot
– Double boiler system (Don’t use gas stove top, to avoid risks)
STEP 2. Mix plant and alcohol
Once you have gathered materials, take your cannabis plant sample. It’s possible that your sample is a mix of buds and also dry leaves. Keep in mind that depending on what material you use, the effects and final results can change. You can break up the mixture using a blender to take advantage of it being as shredded as possible.
It’s important that the alcohol is good quality, as pure as possible, between 95 and 99 proof. Rubbing alcohol should not be used. It’s also recommendable that the alcohol is cold in order to cause the separation of trichomes.
Place the cut up plant with cannabinoids in a recipient and pour in the alcohol until the plant material is covered. Stir for 3 to 5 minutes.
STEP 3. Filter the mixture
After stirring the mixture, filter it through a strainer into the glass jar. You should be able to see that the color of the alcohol is darker, similar to gasoline. You can also filter it into the jar with a cotton cloth, stockings, or a coffee filter, etc.
STEP 4. Boil water and evaporate alcohol
Boil a pot of water above 100ºC.
Very important: the space in which you boil the mixture must be well ventilated since the gas that is produced during the evaporation process is flammable. That way, you avoid any possible fire or explosion. Stay away from the hot apparatus’ and avoid lighting any matches or cigarettes. If you have a ventilator, it would be very useful in order to help circulate air and the gases being emitted.
In the pot of boiling water, put the glass jar with your filtered mixture inside the top boiler. If you have two pots that fit inside of each other this could work. The idea is that the water and the mixture are in separate recipients.
Pay attention to the mixture in order to control how the alcohol evaporates.
STEP 5. Add olive oil
When you see that more or less 10% of alcohol remains in the glass jar, add a drop of extra virgin olive oil, or coconut oil if you don’t have olive oil. Stir and leave the mixture to evaporate a bit more. When the alcohol has evaporated you will see that it stops bubbling and that the remaining mixture is thicker, but above all, can be smelled.
Meanwhile, heat up 200ml of oil in the same boiler. This will help to fuse the oil to the cannabinoids. Continue to heat up the mixture in case it is starting to cool down and then slowly mix it with the warm oil, pouring slowly. Stir well, and afterwards add another 500ml of room temperature oil. Let it cool down and then save it in small jars or wherever you wish.
It’s that simple! Now you can enjoy your own homemade medicinal cannabis oil.
