Hygiene Protocol for the Reproduction of Legal Cannabis Cuttings

In the world of cannabis cultivation, propagation through cuttings is one of the most effective techniques for maintaining high-quality genetics and ensuring healthy plants. However, this process requires a fundamental factor: hygiene. From sterilizing tools to cleaning the environment, every detail influences the success of rooting and the prevention of pests and diseases.

But this article is not just about good agricultural practices; it is also about how the propagation of cuttings has become the perfect opportunity to strengthen our collaborative cultivation in Uruguay.

1. OBJECTIVE

Establish hygiene standards and procedures to prevent contamination of cannabis cuttings, ensure a safe environment, and comply with current health regulations.

2. SCOPE

This protocol applies to all areas of cultivation, propagation, and handling of cuttings, as well as to company personnel and visitors.

3. GENERAL HYGIENE RULES

  • All personnel must maintain strict personal hygiene, including washing hands with water and soap before entering work areas.
  • The use of gloves, masks, lab coats, caps, and footwear exclusively for the cultivation area is mandatory.
  • Entering the cutting propagation areas in street clothes is prohibited.
  • Eating, drinking, or smoking is not allowed in cultivation and propagation areas.
  • Shoe soles must be cleaned on a sterilization mat and sprayed with ASEVI or a similar disinfectant before entering work areas.
  • The doors of the cultivation room must remain closed once inside.

4. ACCESS CONTROL

  • A changing area will be implemented before entering the propagation zone.
  • Visitors and suppliers must wear protective clothing and disinfect themselves before entering.

5. TOOL HANDLING AND DISINFECTION

  • Each cutting variety must have its own designated and marked pair of scissors to prevent cross-contamination.
  • All tools used in propagation must be disinfected before and after use with isopropyl alcohol or chlorine-based solutions.
  • Scissors must be sterilized in an infrared device before use.
  • After infrared sterilization, the scissors must be immersed in a chlorine solution to ensure disinfection and cooling. (Chlorine granulate solution: 1 g/L of distilled water)
  • Work surfaces must be cleaned and disinfected daily.
  • It is recommended that each worker use individual tools whenever possible.

6. PEST AND PATHOGEN CONTROL

  • A monitoring and biological pest control program must be implemented, along with periodic virus testing.
  • Regular inspections of cuttings to detect signs of diseases or pests.
  • Immediate quarantine for plants or cuttings suspected of contamination.

7. WASTE MANAGEMENT

  • Organic waste must be disposed of daily in designated containers and treated according to current regulations.
  • Designated areas must be allocated for waste storage, with frequent cleaning.

8. PERSONNEL HYGIENE

  • Showering before entering the cultivation area is recommended.
  • Nails must be kept short and clean to prevent dirt accumulation, or gloves must be worn.
  • The use of strong-scented perfumes or lotions is not allowed.

9. TRAINING AND SUPERVISION

  • Regular training sessions on hygiene and best practices in handling cuttings will be conducted.
  • Designated personnel will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the protocol.

10. RECORD-KEEPING AND AUDITING

  • Records of cleaning, disinfection, and pest control will be kept in a calendar, noting the date of the process and the responsible person.
  • Internal audits will be conducted to evaluate compliance with the protocol and make adjustments if necessary.

This protocol must be strictly followed by all personnel and visitors to ensure the propagation of cannabis cuttings under optimal and safe conditions.
