Choosing your plant: Sativa, Indica and Ruderalis
On a scientific level, all cannabis plans are called sativa which is latin means “cultivated” and from that 3 types are distinguished, whose full names are: cannabis sativa sativa, cannabis sativa indica, and cannabis sativa ruderalis. Although in common speeche we know them by their abbreviated names and that is how we differentiate them. Generally, the tendency is to classify and look for characteristics of sativa and indica plants.
Following, we will see how to differentiate these three varieties by morphology, their characteristics, and effects. However, a multitude of marijuana seed types exist, since the genetics can give us different versions of the same plant, and infinite combinations can be made playing with the percentage of each type according to objectives and desired effects. Thus, producers have been making a multitude of hybrids for many years, looking for new aromas, textures, and effects in the cannabis plant.
Energy, psychedelia, and creativity
The Sativa plant is native to America, Asia and Africa. Since it grows in zones with a lot of humidity, its morphology and physical characteristics are made to adapt to this type of environment. In order to distinguish them, we can see that they have the ability to grow very tall, with a long trunk and branches, their leaves are long and narrow, and branches also grow to be long and outstretched, for which the distance between knots is quite spread out.
Its growth process is relatively long, since it can oscillate between 10 and 20 weeks. Although, on the other hand, the female bud yield is large as it can reach up to 1.5 kilos per plant, in terms of dry material. The buds are larger as well, since they have more space they don’t accumulate the same way as indica, and they have a more subtle smell.
Its adaptation to warm and humid zones make the buds grow more loosely, not as compacted, in order for the flower to breathe, and so humidity doesn’t accumulate, thereby avoiding possible mold growth.
If you want to cultivate this type of plant, you should keep in mind that it requires space. According to the variety and purity of the type of plant, it can grow to be 4.5m outdoors, being the most ideal variety to grow in gardens and outdoor spaces. It has little ability to produce the well known THC cannabinoid and has medicinal effects. For many years, the fiber of the plant has been used for cloth-making, and it has even been used to make paper.
EFFECTS of CANNABIS SATIVA
It is considered one of the most psychedelic because of its psychoactive effects.
It provides energy, excitement, euphoria, stimulation, encourages creativity, and helps with depression. It tends to be used during the day, and can help with the development of artistic activities because of its cerebral effect. It also produces the typical, sought after “laughing fit” effect.
Relaxing and therapeutic
The cannabis plant known as indica is found in parts of India, Nepal and Pakistan. As it grows in dry, arid zones, its adaptation has made a shorter plant, with robust branches, and wide leaves. Its shapes is similar to a bush—more dense and compact. Its flowers are denser and heavier and around them small orange, reddish, or even purple leaves can bee seen. All of this makes it such that the buds stay compact and have a beautiful visual effect.
It tends to be grown indoors since space can be taken advantage of more than with Sativa. It can reach an average high of 1.5 meters, and its growth is faster, from 4 to 6 weeks. Given this, many growers and cannabis seed producers sit is as very lucrative since more plants can be grown in the same space.
It is usually planted outdoors in September. The indica strains are characterized by having high THC contents, up to 16%, and historically it was widely grown because of this psychoactive. In Asia, there was also a lot of tradition around using its fiber for clothing and in India its dried flowers are used for different recipes. Marijuana and hasheesh is produced from the cannabis indica variety because of its high trichome content, and it has become a recreational plan, as well as very popular for medicinal use. According to its origin and use, it has come to have many subspecies categories.
Effects of cannabis Indica
Its high CBD content gives it a relaxing physical and mental effect, in contrast with Sativa. For that reason, its used for activities like meditation and relaxation.
It tends to be used at night, since it relieves tension and produces a narcotic effect that aids sleep, and so it is very useful for fighting insomnia. On the other hand, it also helps to reduce or alleviate acute or chronic pain, arthritis, etc.
The medicinal and aromatic cannabis
The Ruderalis marijuana plant grows in parts of Siberia, where there are very few hours of daylight and this makes it such that its flowering can start without requiring light. It is the smallest compared to the other two, from 30 to 80cm, though it is strong.
It is a slow grower and isn’t as popular as the previously mentioned plants. Still, it is used to make genetic crosses and hybrid experiments. Crossing ruderalis genetics with sativa and indica gives us varieties of autoflowering marijuana seeds.
Its THC content is almost null, but due to its high CBD content, a non psychoactive component, it is extremely valued for its medicinal use. At the same time, it is used for the production of incense, and essences because of its aromatic spectrum. Genetic combinations are often made with it in order to add aromas.
Effects of cannabis ruderalis
Pure cannabis ruderalis doesn’t have psychoactive effects and is not used as a recreational plant. However, its high CBD content makes it very important for curative and medicinal uses. It is used as a sedative and anti-inflammatory in order to alleviate pain, reduce anxiety, in the cases of chronic pain and arthritis, mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or for cancer patients in order to help with symptoms.
